Riders at Stonewall Farm (a.k.a. Team Stonewall) have something special. Not to be egotistical, but our riders have something called, presence. Not all riders have presence. By definition, presence is ‘a person’s bearings, especially when it demands respectful attention. This is exactly what we do. Our attitude and presentation when we go to events is not only one to be respected, but one that puts us above the rest.
How do we achieve this attitude? It is really quite simple. We must understand that showing is much more about learning than winning ribbons. Stonewall riders set goals for themselves before even leaving the barn. They know what they want to accomplish, and accomplishing these goals is even more rewarding than winning a ribbon. Ribbons are simply icing on the cake, a reward for a job well done.
Achieving a winning attitude involves helping each other. Stonewall riders are always willing to pitch in, to see that the job gets done -- and done WELL, at that! When we travel to events, our riders work together. We make sure that each rider gets their number, registers for their classes, and that each horse is properly groomed and tacked. No one should be preparing for their classes alone. If someone has a free hand, they are expected to be either up at the trailer, helping Stonewall riders, or ringside, watching, helping and supporting each other. Last minute details are important, so anyone with a few extra minutes is expected to help others. This extra effort makes a win-win situation for everyone involved!
Also important is our attitude toward other competitors. They are NOT the enemy!! No matter what their attitude toward you, a good sportsman treats others with common courtesy. That’s good sportsmanship. When we show good sportsmanship at all times, it further proves that Team Stonewall has achieved the winning attitude.
So remember, the three key words to achieving the winning attitude: Learning, Helping, and Sportsmanship. These three words, when effectively applied define Team Stonewall.
Good luck to everyone this show season!
